Before Off Matte hits the road with Missing Link for their US tour, we wanted to talk about the similarities seen in Jiu Jitsu and the hardcore/punk scene. Subcultures form around shared standards. Not trends, not aesthetics—standards. How people train, how they show up, and how they carry themselves.

Hardcore and jiu jitsu come from completely different places, but they operate in similar ways. Both are built on intensity, pressure, and a level of honesty you can’t fake. You’re either participating or you’re not—there’s no in-between.

In both, respect isn’t given automatically. It’s earned over time—through consistency, effort, and showing up when it’s uncomfortable. The people who last are the ones who commit to that process.

There’s also a shared independence. These aren’t top-down cultures. They’re built from the ground up—by the people in the room and on the mat. That’s what gives them their identity.

Spending time around both, the overlap becomes obvious. The same mentality carries across—discipline, awareness, and a willingness to push past where you’d normally stop.

That’s where Off Matte comes from. Not from surface-level crossover, but from understanding the structure behind both. Where performance matters, details matter, and progression is something you build—not something you’re given.
